by George Dienhart You have to give it to Gwen Ifel- not because you respect her as a journalist, but because she has more gumption than Hillary. More Audacity than Obama. More nerve than a snooty french maitre d'. She has, as they say, brass cajones. All week, conservatives have been wondering "What were they thinking" as the news broke. Turns out they (The Commission on Presidential Debates) were not thinking at all, as it turns out. That's because Ms. Ifel didn't tell them about her book. Evidently, she didn't feel it was pertinent. So there she is, lobbying for th moderator position- and she doesn't think that writing a book called "The Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama" is important? She doesn’t think that the publication date of Jan. 20, 2009 is relevant. I'm sure that it's just a coincidence that it falls on Inauguration Day. It is painfully clear that Ms. Ifel has an agenda. She will profit from an Obama Presidency. A book about the president released on Inauguration Day is a license to print money. A book on the loser is destined for the bargain bin at the local book discounter. As always, there is an explanation. Ifel told Reporters "Do you think they made the same assumptions about Lou Cannon (who is white) when he wrote his book about Reagan?" said Ifill, who is black. She then discreetly played the race card, "I don't know what it is. I find it curious." There's a problem here (besides her race based deflection). Lou Cannon's book came out after Reagan's second term. There is no apt comparison between the two books. Cannon did not make any money by taking sides in the debate. Ifel's credibility is on the line. Does she even care, or is she already off counting her money? Only time will tell.
